Matthew 6:9
Hallowed – to make holy; sanctify; consecrate; to honor as holy; consider sacred. (Dictionary.com)
Hagiazo (hag-ee-ad-zo) – to make holy, consecrate, sanctify.
Qadosh – appoint, bid, consecrate, dedicate, hallow, be holy – “to be” (root).
Holy is the Name of God, Yahweh, our Abba Father. Holy is He. Qadosh is the One True God – holy, sanctified, set apart. The mastermind and creator of all the universe and everything in it, has decided to send His son to us. He then sent His Holy Spirit to dwell in us. The One who is “Set Apart” from everything else in this world has made Himself available to us, has become personal with us, has become intimate with us. This being, we must still recognize His Holiness, that He is ultimately set apart from this world, yet in this world all at the same time. We must always remember who our God, and Father, truly is, and who we are. God is holy and we are not. He is good by nature and we are not.
So we have been created in His image, remember back to Genesis 1:26-27. And in this part of our story and Hi-s-tory, God lets us in on a little secret of His creation process: that we were created in His image and likeness. So if God is Holy and set apart and Sanctified, and we were created in His image, should we not take on the frame of mind that we were and are created to be Holy as well? However, because of our sin-filled nature, our holiness has escaped us and the only way to gain it back is through Jesus Christ, the One and Only, Begotten, who gave up His life so we could gain ours back again. And now when our Father looks to us, looking through Jesus who is our mediator, we are once again seen as Holy and Righteous. It is only through Jesus though, and the blood He poured out upon the cross and into this world, that we gain our holiness back.
So, if through Jesus we can come back into right standing with our Heavenly Father, and regain a posture of holiness, what then do we say about our name? Are we hypocrites that the world looks down upon, or are we true and authentic to our new posture in God’s Family? I know many people that after being saved took upon themselves new names, and this includes personal friends as well as people mentioned in the Bible. This is because, for them, taking on a new stance of purpose in this world, especially being for God, they would need a name that would help tell the story of who they are inside and out, and because of Jesus and His work on the cross for us all.
Prayer
Father God, I thank you that you are true, pure, and holy, and that we can be holy as well. I pray that You would draw me closer to you so that I may enter and remain in the Holiness that you created me to clothe myself in. Amen!
What does Genesis 1:26-27 tell us about who we are?
If you know who you are according to Genesis 1:26-27, does your daily life reflect who you are truly meant to be?
Does the name that you live by today give you purpose or do you need to ask God what your true name is just as Simon and Saul in the New Testament we’re given the names Peter and Paul?
